Measuring process for balustrade project areas

Many people expect the measuring process for installing glass balustrades to be difficult, but in reality it is quite straightforward. Whether you’re shopping around for quotes or already in the planning phase, having accurate measurements at hand will prove to be very useful during discussions with your prospective installer. In this blog post we will be sharing some helpful tips for taking accurate measurements and getting your project off on the right foot.

Getting the Measurements Right

Patience and preparation are key to achieving a successful measurement. Never rush the process, and always double check your measurements to ensure their accuracy. By keeping the following tips in mind, you can look forward to ordering a balustrade system which perfectly meets your needs and makes optimal use of your project area.

Gather the Essential Tools

There are a few essential tools you will need throughout the measuring process, with the most obvious being a tape measure, marker (chalk works well) and a pen and paper. If the gradient of your space appears uneven, it’s a good idea to keep some string and a spirit level handy. It is best to work in pairs, with one individual tasked with measuring and the other recording the data.

Make a Plan

Drawing up a rough plan on a piece of paper is a great way to gain insight into how your balustrade will look within the specified area. There’s no need to go all out; even a simple drawing which demonstrates the positioning and measurements can prove very helpful. You may even discover some potential issues with your design, which you can bring up during discussions with your designer. Don’t forget to make note of the material the supporting platform is made from (e.g. brick, concrete, timber, sandstone etc.) along with any accompanying support structures.

Jot down your measurements alongside your drawing, and feel free to make notes to assist with interpretation of the drawing. You can also include some photos alongside the drawing, which will provide a better interpretation of the angles, complexities and objects which may affect the balustrade design.

What measurements do I need to take?

You will need to start by measuring the outside edge of your installation area. This will enable your balustrade company to identify and propose the most suitable balustrade options. With the outer dimensions of your installation area known, our team can calculate the total size of your balustrade and optimal positioning for fixings.

Balustrades in Australia must be a minimum of 1 meter high. Use a measuring tape to determine your desired balustrade height, and let your chosen supplier know of your specific requirements so that glass can be fabricated according to your specifications.

In most cases this information will be sufficient to begin the planning and design phase for your balustrade install. If you are seeking quotes, providing prospective installers with measurements and photos via email will enable them to prepare an estimate for your project. However, we recommend engaging a professional for an obligation free measure and quote as this will ensure the most accurate results and help to expedite the commencement of your project.
